Programme profile

In this unique programme, at the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, you will learn about developing innovative drugs, especially for diseases of the central nervous system and the immune system. The programme comprises a major and an elective course profile. The major represents three-quarters of your total study load and consists of compulsory and elective courses. When choosing a course profile you should select subjects that match your interests (and future ambitions).

The educational approach at the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences is based on creating a project-based learning environment. Topical pharmaceutical research issues form the basis of the projects and the aim is to solve these together with a group of fellow students. The projects are supported by lectures, lab sessions, skills lab activities and laboratory experiments.

A project-based educational approach has several advantages: you not only learn theoretical knowledge and become a skilled practitioner in the laboratory: you also develop a critical and academic attitude. In addition, there is lively interaction between teachers and students, and between students, which stimulates both your motivation and your creativity. Importantly, you are in immediate contact with research groups and leading researchers in the field from the word go.

Drug Pipeline; Epidemiology and Development of New Drugs; Behaviours of the Drug in the Human Body; The Drug and the Cell; The Drug Molecule

Years 2 & 3:
Compulsory Modules:
Neuro Immunopharmacology; Analytical Methods;

Electives and optional course profile
In the first and second year you are introduced to disciplines such as pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, biopharmaceutics, epidemiology and toxicology. In the last part of the second year and the first half of the third year you can choose elective courses in one or more specialist fields that interest you

Entry Requirements

Either: 3 A-levels, inc Chemistry [and minimum AS Maths and Physics] & 3 GCSEs [Grades A-C]
Or: 3 A-Levels, inc Chemistry & Biology [and minimum AS Maths] & 3 GCSEs [inc Physics at Grade B]

Scottish Students are required to have a SQC with 2 Advanced Highers and at least 4 Highers. Subjects to include Chemistry, Maths and Physics.

Six subjects at Leaving Certificate, 3 subjects at H4, inc Chemistry, Biology and Physics  [plus Hons Maths].
